Chapter 7

Dogs

Meet Tuge, the water loving Labradoodle.

Many varieties of dogs love the water and will typically jump in for an occasional swim. This activity in a backyard pond can have disastrous results with significant damage. Not only will dogs jumping into the pond water create issues but there are many reports where dogs have died because they had fallen into a pond and could not get out, tiring themselves until they drowned.

The most successful avenue for addressing both of the above situations is to design any pond where dogs may be present with an easy in-and-out access point. Significant damage has occurred to ponds when dogs cannot get out and their non-retractable claws will create quite a lot of damage as the panicked dog attempts to get out of the pond by clawing at everything in front of them. An accessible stair-step arrangement of large rocks and boulders provides the dog with an easy place to get in or out without damaging the pond walls. This same design will also address the issue of a strange dog accidentally falling into your pond and having a way out before they tire and drown.
